Former MP and veteran Malayalam actor Innocent Vareed Thekkethala’s health has taken a turn for the worse, according to a statement released by a private hospital in Kerala on Saturday. The 75-year-old actor is reportedly in critical condition and is currently on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) support, a form of cardiopulmonary support where the patient’s blood is oxygenated outside the body using a machine.

Innocent, known for his humorous roles in Malayalam films, has been unwell for some time now. A few years ago, he was diagnosed with cancer, but in 2015, he announced that he was finally free of the disease. However, in March this year, he was admitted to a hospital in Ernakulam after complaining of breathing difficulties and uneasiness. Innocent subsequently developed a throat infection, which has now put him in a critical condition.

The actor has acted in over 700 Malayalam films, and his last film was Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Kaduva, which was released in 2022. He has also made his presence felt in English, Kannada, Hindi, and Tamil movies.

Apart from his acting career, Innocent has also authored five books, of which “Cancer wardile chiri” is an account of his experiences while undergoing treatment for throat cancer.

The veteran actor has won multiple awards, including three Kerala State awards. His debut film was Nrityashala in 1972, and he has since then become an integral part of the Malayalam film industry.
