In “Yaariyan 2,” the director duo Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru offer a Stripped-down rendition reminiscent of Anjali Menon’s renowned Malayalam film “Bangalore Days.” Rather than a cohesive narrative, the movie appears to be a series of music videos strung together by a flimsy storyline.
Divya Khosla Kumar and Meezan Jafri’s ‘Yaariyan 2’ released in theatres on October 20. It opened with lukeawarm response at the box office in India. According to trade reports, the film minted just Rs 60 lakh on Day 1. ‘Yaariyan 2’ clashed with Tiger Shroff and Kriti Sanon’s action film ‘Ganapath’ on Friday. It is the sequel to 2014 film, ‘Yaariyan’, helmed by Divya Khosla.
In the story of the film, viewers are treated to the standard emotional palette of music videos, where romance is distilled into basic sentiments of joy and heartbreak. The three cousins, portrayed by conventionally attractive actors, deliver performances that barely meet the minimum expectations.
Yaariyan 2 Plot
The Yaariyan 2 plot meanders through the lives of Laadli (Divya Khosla Kumar), who reluctantly agrees to an arranged marriage due to her medical history, Shikhar (Meezan Jafri), a brooding biker with father issues, and Bajrang (Pearl V Puri), who experiences the sting of heartbreak mid-flight.
Laadli’s gradual realization about her husband’s aloof behavior forms a key turning point, while the trio of cousins navigates through the city, providing unwavering support to one another, reminiscent of the quintessential BFF camaraderie.
Despite the abundance of tears shed, the film does manage to avoid the trappings of clichéd love stories, offering a refreshing take on the genre. Visually, the movie captures the vibrancy of a festive ad, with each sequence accompanied by a fitting musical composition, often accompanied by lively dance numbers.
Although the music in the film is pleasant enough during the viewing experience, none of the tunes manage to linger in the viewer’s memory post-screening. This musical narrative, reminiscent of the commercial films of the bygone 1980s and 1990s, evokes a sense of nostalgia, harking back to an era when lip-sync songs and catchy tunes were the soul of popular cinema.
Despite its shortcomings, “Yaariyan 2” manages to tap into this sentiment, tugging at the heartstrings of audiences longing for the musical magic of yesteryears.
