Tuesday, May 19, 2026: The Tamil-Telugu film Karuppu, starring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, has had an impressive start at the box office, crossing ₹140 crore worldwide within its first four days. The RJ Balaji-directed mythological drama, which follows a father and daughter caught in a corrupt legal system, opened strongly on Friday and surged over the weekend, collecting ₹15.50 crore on day one, ₹24.15 crore on Saturday, and ₹28.35 crore on Sunday.

On its first Monday, the film earned ₹14.30 crore in India across 5,947 shows, bringing its domestic gross to ₹95.30 crore and net totals to ₹82.30 crore. Overseas earnings have added ₹46 crore so far, resulting in a global gross of ₹141.30 crore despite the expected weekday drop.

RJ Balaji’s Karuppu attempts to emulate the classic hero’s monomyth, portraying Saravanan (Suriya), a struggling lawyer, as a local deity-like figure fighting for justice. The first half builds promise with Saravanan’s battle against a corrupt legal system, but the narrative soon falls into overused tropes of good versus evil, leaving little room for surprises.

Karuppu leans heavily on spectacle, glamour, and star appeal rather than strong storytelling. Its loud and exaggerated presentation overshadows any emotional depth. Trisha’s Kamashi, a fellow lawyer, is sidelined almost entirely, highlighting the script’s lack of focus and reinforcing patriarchal storytelling norms.

The story culminates in a courtroom showdown where mythical justice trumps the sluggish legal system. While this could have been impactful, the over-reliance on star power and clichéd resolution makes the ending feel mechanical rather than earned.

Karuppu reflects a troubling trend in cinema where films are manufactured for hype instead of crafted with originality and artistic intention. Despite its grand setup, it delivers little more than predictability.
