July 22, 2026: Months after Jana Nayagan became one of Indian cinema’s most talked-about unreleased films, director H Vinoth is attempting to shift the conversation from controversy back to cinema.
Ahead of the film’s theatrical release, the filmmaker addressed the allegations that have surrounded the Vijay-starrer for months—from claims that the movie was intentionally leaked online to questions over the delay in its certification.
Rejecting speculation that the makers orchestrated the piracy, Vinoth said such a theory simply doesn’t hold up for a production of this scale.
“A film made on a budget of nearly ₹400 crore cannot be leaked so casually. If there had been any conspiracy involving the makers, it would have surfaced almost immediately,” he said during a media interaction.
The director’s comments come after Jana Nayagan spent months in headlines for reasons unrelated to its story. The film was delayed after facing certification hurdles, before an online leak made pirated copies widely available, triggering intense debate across social media and fan communities.
Why Vijay Stayed Silent about Jana Nayagan
Another question that followed the controversy was Actor Vijay‘s decision to remain publicly silent despite the film’s leak.
Vinoth said the actor deliberately chose not to intervene about Jana Nayagan , believing his involvement would have shifted the focus away from the issue itself and invited political criticism.
According to the director, any public appeal from Vijay could have been interpreted through a political lens, especially at a time when the actor was actively transitioning into politics.
On the Certification Delay
Vinoth also acknowledged that the certification process had been frustrating for the team but stopped short of directly blaming the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
He said the makers believed the film Jana Nayagan had faced an unfair delay but lacked concrete evidence to legally challenge the process. Instead, the team focused on ensuring the film eventually reached cinemas.
The Bigger Surprise Isn’t the Controversy
Ironically, the biggest story around Jana Nayagan may no longer be the leak itself.
Despite pirated versions circulating online for months, audience interest appears largely unaffected. The film has recorded strong advance bookings ahead of release, suggesting that fans are still willing to experience Actor Vijay’s final film as a full-fledged theatrical event.
For the industry, it offers another reminder that while piracy can dent revenues, it doesn’t always erase audience demand—particularly when a film carries the star power and emotional significance of a farewell performance.
