October 5, 2026: Shekhar Suman has come out in defence of Sanjay Dutt after the actor’s remarks on Shekhar Tonite sparked an online debate, arguing that the controversy has largely stemmed from comments being viewed outside the satirical context in which they were made.

During an interaction with a TV channel, Suman said Dutt’s remarks were made in a light-hearted and positive spirit. He stressed that the actor has immense respect for India and its people and should not be criticised for comments that were never intended to offend anyone.

Suman also pointed out that Shekhar Tonite is built around satire and humour, describing the show as pro-people, unbiased and democratic. His defence raises an interesting question: when a celebrity talk show deliberately mixes humour with political and social commentary, should every controversial remark be taken at face value?

Shekhar Suman Says Sanjay Dutt’s Remarks Were Innocuous

The controversy began after Dutt appeared on Shekhar Tonite on Gandhi Jayanti and spoke about the current state of the country. While praising Indians for being large-hearted and hospitable, the actor said he no longer felt the same sense of peace in the country and hoped those days would return.

The conversation then took a satirical turn when Dutt imagined himself as the Prime Minister for five minutes and brought his iconic Munna Bhai persona into the discussion. Referring to Mahatma Gandhi’s three monkeys, he jokingly suggested that the country needed a fourth monkey — one that would step in and act after seeing something wrong.

What followed was an online controversy, with some viewers interpreting Dutt’s remarks as a serious political statement rather than part of a scripted and humorous exchange.

Dutt later clarified his position on X, saying he had never intended to hurt, offend or disrespect any individual, community or institution. He explained that the conversation was scripted and designed to be light-hearted, with its tone influenced by the humour and social messaging associated with the Munna Bhai films and the idea of Gandhigiri.

Suman’s latest comments effectively reinforce that explanation. He believes Dutt’s intentions were clear and positive, and that the actor’s remarks should be understood in the context of satire rather than treated as a direct attack on the country or its people.

Still, the Shekhar Tonite episode highlights a familiar problem in celebrity entertainment: a joke may be scripted, but once a provocative line leaves the studio and reaches social media, audiences are free to interpret it very differently. In Dutt’s case, that gap between intended humour and public interpretation is what appears to have fuelled the controversy
