MASTER Movie Review: 2 MASTER BLASTER Vijay’s Elevate the Film

HomeMovie ReviewMASTER Movie Review: 2 MASTER BLASTER Vijay's Elevate the Film

MASTER MOVIE Review in short: In one sentence it is a double treat for both Vijay Fans, Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi. But, wait a minute, Keep expectations low and watch, it’s a good movie with a simple story, the story takes form very slow and characters of both run parallel.

VJS has done his usual mass natural style acting while Vijay has tried a lot different style and mannerisms. It was just so warming and astonishing to see an actor like Vijay to play a normal role (non heroic/little real), tried to, in comparison to some of his recent;

VJS has got the hero type character in the movie though negative role.

MASTER MOVIE REVIEW; It’s a double treat for fans of Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi

Vijay Master Movie

The climax scene in comparison to the whole movie is just gone a whole another level, VJS and VJ is just competing and acting. VJ won with his variations nd VJS gud with his action and dialogue style.

Just for efforts and performances of the actors can can be watched again nd again and thanx a ton for not making the movie dramatic with emotional scenes (like in theri) while also conveying messages just appropriate

The team could have not hyped it so much and shown all good scenes to us before as promo and trailer.

Special  mentions: jr.jaanu, shantanu and kutti payan, das was gud.  Andrea (cameo?)gud but y tho, new prfssr could hav had sme mre combo screen presence(nice).

Master review – it’s entirely a different Vijay film. Do give a watch. His mannerisms and VJS performance will make you love this film. Lokesh has yet again proved by his making but there are few glitches, which made this film just a watchable affair.

Vijay Sethupathy Master Movie

First negative is the over expectation for this film. Secondly, the screenplay in the second half. Avalothan!!!

Unnecessary scenes and negatives – Pre-climax lorry stunt, bringing too many characters into the film, no scope for actors other than VJ and VJS, a scene either takes lot of time to end or it ends abruptly, juvenile portion could’ve been better with more emotions/impact, expect vathi coming other songs picturization/montages weren’t that good, the justification of drunkard JD is not clear/ reason behind this. Felt like the film was shot on rush at places.

Highlights: Mahendran’s acting, Vijay’s intro, Vijay’s and VJS humour worked in many areas, interval block, ghillie’s kabaddi fight sequence, climax fight.

It has mistakes so does other films; but, this film definitely requires a theatre experience. So do give a watch.

Master is definitely a worth while movie to watch. The movie balances out between fan base for Thalapathy Vijay and Lokesh’s Direction. The first half starts out nice and slow, but this movie transitions to a different type of Vijay’s commercial entertainer. The movie does have a simple story, but the action in most scenes carry the emotions and the movie. VJS had a great and strong portrayal throughout the whole movie, where he is indeed evil but does become humorous towards the end a bit.

MASTER:

He is a DRUNKEN MASTER. You can’t talk to him after 6’O clock. He is a BLUFF MASTER too.  If you ask him any question he will tell you a KUTTY STORY from the past Block Buster MOVIES. No one can guess what would be his next MOVE IS. Because he is a Professor in Psychology. His INCLUSION into the Juvenile Prison as Teacher is to bring down the PSYCHO behavior of the inmates to provide a LOGICAL CONCLUSION.  While doing so the MASTER MEETS the MAN who is the MASTER MIND behind the MANipulation of the INMATES. How his MASTER STROKE eliminates the MONSTER, is not KUTTY but a PRETTY LOOOOONG Story.

The character of JD aka John Durairaj played by Vijay is bit UNORTHODOX considering the regular clichés of the Mass Hero movies. Drinking is his Favorite PASS TIME because he has a BAD PAST-TIME. But neither the Director nor the Character reveal the reason for it till the end. Probably kept this as SECRET for a SEQUEL? Not Sure. Even though there are couple of ANGELS (Malavika Mohanan, Andrea Jeremiah), there are no Love ANGLES in this movie. No Place for ROMANCE in an ANGRY MEN’s Story. However, the FANS of both the VIJAYs (Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi) need not be disappointed as sufficient and equal amount of Heroism materials supplied by the writers to both of them. So, one can sit back and enjoy the Mass Dialogues and Stylish Mannerisms.

Vijay Sethupathi is seen wearing Bead strings, cross chain and Taweez and one of his aids ask him why he is wearing everything. He replies, “When I am in danger at least one of these gods will come to my rescue. That’s why”. During the College Elections, the Election Presiding Officer, Vijay tells the student to remove the Cast and Religion column in the nomination form. Two different characters, yet the writer has ensured to project both of them as Secular.

The character is a cake walk for both Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi. Vijay Sethupathi’s character is more subtle but powereful, while Vijay’s character is more vocal and impactful. If you leave out both these from the list, it is Mahendran as Young Bhavani, who steals the show even in a brief stint on the screen. Andrea Jeremiah character seems like a forceful inclusion in the script.

Songs are forgettable except Kutty Story which reminds Kolaveri Di with its English-Tamil bilingual mix of lyrics. Background music is apt for this kind of mass movie. Lokesh Kanagaraj as writer director has tried a different style of approach with a common story. Vijay Sethupathi’s presence as antagonist makes all the difference, which otherwise with any other villain in his character, would have looked pale and ordinary.  The duration of the movie is too long to sit through for 3 hours. A trimmed version could have been more impactful and interesting to watch.

MASTER….. BLASTER!!!

Master – It is an okish film that could have been handled better in many ways. The good director can’t deliver in his usual style as he is thinking both commercially and then convey strong message. He has shown Vijay differently in certain portions and Vijay excels there nicely. I saw glimpses of good direction only through VJS characterisation and his superb acting. His performance impressed me throughout the movie. Also Anirudh BGM and a couple of action scenes are good.

Master is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language action-thriller film directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, who also wrote the screenplay along with Rathna Kumar and Pon Parthiban. The film stars Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi, with Malavika Mohanan, Arjun Das, Andrea Jeremiah and Shanthanu Bhagyaraj in supporting roles. It was produced by Xavier Britto, under his maiden production studio XB Film Creators, with Lalit Kumar and Jagadish Palaniswamy co-producing the film; the former also distributed the film under the banner Seven Screen Studios.

The film was launched under on August 2019, whereas principal photography commenced on October 2019 and ended on February 2020. Filming took place at Delhi, Chennai and Karnataka. Originally launched under the tentative title Thalapathy 64, the official title Master was announced on 31 December 2019. The music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, while cinematography and editing are performed by Sathyan Sooryan and Philomin Raj respectively.

Master was initially planned for theatrical release on 9 April 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in India. The makers of the film preferred to wait for a theatrical release, despite the digital streaming rights being sold to Prime Video. By the end of December 2020, the film was confirmed for theatrical release on 13 January 2021, a day before Pongal. The film received mixed to positive reviews from critics and audiences as well, praising performances of the lead cast especially Vijay’s and Vijay Sethupathi’s, but criticised the film’s excessive length and slow pace.

But the film starrer Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi over acting, and the film is only for Vijay fans because of illogical fighting and mass scenes, As a neutral fan i didn’t like this film because Lokesh is a great upcoming Director but because of Actor Vijay’s huge fan base he made this film for Vijay fans only like DARBAR which is directed bu A R Murugadas is also a mass film without any story line which became flop.

CONCLUSION :

If you are a actor Vijay fan you can enjoy the mass film without any story line , But if you are a neutral fan you feel overactive and silly fight scenes.Master – A different Vijay festival mass entertainer .It’s definitely not the best work of Lokesh kanagaraj  but kudos for using the super stardom of thalapathy Vijay and sarcastic and devil may care swag of Vijay sethupathy within the mass cinema format and keeping his standards… is praiseworthy.

Anirudh’s Bgm elevates the movie to new heights but the same can’t be said about the songs.. are just average.. Other than two songs (vaathi coming and kutty story) the rest don’t leave much of an impact.

Editing is fine, could have trimmed a little (3 hours)

Cinematography is splendid, have to mention the way they have shot using different tones for thalapathy and Vijay sethupathy is visible and  it gives  viewers what to expect from this two characters.

Stunts are energetic and stylish other than much publicized lorry fight block(looks totally unnecessary and graphics is disappointing)

Story is new (atleast when we compare with previous Vijay movies) and is wafer thin.

Screenplay – interesting and fast paced  first half,  its all about lead characters(interesting back story of Vijay sethupathy) but does nothing to move the story forward except for the college election part and a power-packed interval block. Lags towards the second half.  And terrific climax.

Dialogues are a treat, Lokesh has used  Vijays old movie plots, bgm’s, mannerism and dialogues to move the movie forward is interesting and nostalgic and it works big time.

Vijay sethupathy has some of the best dialogues in the movie.

Malivika mohan the leading lady  had a very important role but she just can’t act. Arjun das has a promising future. Other actors are just gap fillers.

Vijay sethupathy is in top form, his swag throughout the movie is a treat  and to perform a villain with no remorse while keeping it simple is.. Just hatsoff, he truly is the biggest plus in the movie.

And thalapathy Vijay.. He fights, dances, cries, laughs.. He has done everything.comic timing is impeccable, action scenes performed with full on energy. He effortlessly carries the movie in his shoulder with his incredible screen presence but the iceing is.. he takes a back seat and gives Vijay sethupathy room to shine unlike   in the movie petta. Special mention to hair and costume designers of Vijay.. He simply looked classy, massy and stylish. Clichéd Vijay stuff are kept in minimal dose. Have to Thank lokesh  for not including socio political speech in the end.

Master is definitely a different Vijay movie, actually was tired of watching same old wine in a new bottle story with glossy song dance routine, overtly choreographed fight blocks and political speeches, master could be a new leash for Vijay fans.. This movie has the calibre to bring viewers back to theatres.
