June 7, 2023 – Filmmaker James Cameron’s highly anticipated movie, Avatar: The Way of Water, is all set to make a splash as it premieres on Disney Plus Hotstar today. The sequel to the groundbreaking 2009 epic adventure, Avatar, has captivated global audiences and shattered box office records since its release last December.
In this latest installment, audiences will join the Sully family – Jake Sully, Neytiri, and their children – as they embark on an extraordinary expedition into unexplored territories of the enchanting planet Pandora.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the film is its breathtaking underwater sequences, which were filmed in a truly groundbreaking manner. James Cameron, known for pushing the boundaries of filmmaking, revealed the immense challenges his team faced in capturing performances underwater.
“The key was to actually shoot underwater and at the surface of the water so people were swimming properly, getting out of the water properly, diving in properly. It looks real because the motion was real. And the emotion was real,” explained Cameron in a statement.
To accomplish this ambitious feat, a massive tank was constructed at Manhattan Beach Studios, the production hub for Cameron and his producing partner, Jon Landau, at their company Lightstorm. This enormous tank spanned an impressive 120 feet in length, 60 feet in width, and 30 feet in depth, filled with over 250,000 gallons of water, replicating the natural conditions of the ocean.
“The tank became our complete Swiss army system. We could do waves breaking on the shore and have people trying to get out of the water while they’re getting hit by waves. We could create wave interaction with the creatures and people surfacing, getting hit by a 10-foot wave and trying to say their lines and trying to breathe at the same time,” Cameron elaborated on the intricate filming process of Avatar.
Avatar: The Way of Water boasts a star-studded cast, including Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Kate Winslet. The film will be available for streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar in multiple languages, including English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.
As audiences eagerly anticipate the film’s release on the popular OTT platform, they can expect to be transported once again to the visually stunning and emotionally captivating world of Avatar. With its groundbreaking underwater sequences and Cameron’s visionary storytelling, Avatar: The Way of Water promises to deliver a cinematic experience like no other, leaving audiences spellbound beneath the depths of Pandora’s magical oceans.
