March 19, 2025: Vicky Kaushal’s historical drama Chhaava has raked in over Rs 750 crore within 33 days of its theatrical release. Chhaava has also set a new record in ticket sales. The film has become the first Hindi movie to sell a whopping 12 million tickets on the popular ticketing platform BookMyShow.
With this record breaking feat Vicky Kaushal’s film has leaped ahead of Stree 2, which starred Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, in terms of total ticket sales.
Ashish Saksena, COO of Cinemas at BookMyShow, confirmed the film’s achievement, stating that it has broken multiple records since its release. The film’s stellar performance in India and abroad reflects its widespread appeal and powerful narrative.
Chhaava Strikes the right chord with the masses

Chhaava has created a buzz not just due to its box-office earnings, but also for its cultural significance. Amid a political stir in Maharashtra, particularly in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, where protests erupted calling for the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb, the film’s portrayal of historical figures has ignited strong emotions.
Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, mentioned that the film has stirred public sentiment against the Mughal ruler , further fueling debates on historical narratives in modern India.
Produced by Maddock Films, and Directed by Laxman Utekar, the film’s domestic success has been exceptional, collecting Rs 219.25 crore nett in its opening week. The numbers continued to soar with Rs 180.25 crore nett in the second week, and Rs 84.05 crore nett in the third week. The fourth week saw a further Rs 55.95 crore nett, and the film’s recent weekend collections continue to impress.
Kaushal stars in the titular role of Chhaava, a powerful historical epic based on the Marathi novel by Shivaji Sawant. The ensemble cast includes Rashmika Mandanna as Maharani Yesubai, Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb, Ashutosh Rana as Sarsenapati Hambirao Mohite, and Divya Dutta as Rajmata Soyarabai. The film’s stirring soundtrack, composed by A.R. Rahman, complements its gripping narrative, further elevating its emotional and cultural impact.
While Vicky Kaushal’s movie has been breaking records, other films are also seeing considerable success. John Abraham’s political thriller The Diplomat, which follows an Indian diplomat’s high-stakes mission in Pakistan, has grossed Rs 16.2 crore nett in its first five days.
With the movie continuing to soar at the box office, it is expected to remain a major player in the global cinematic landscape in the coming weeks. The Box Office collection reports are as per the latest trade data shared by industry portal Sacnilk, the film has amassed a total worldwide gross of Rs 764 crore. . This impressive total includes Rs 673.9 crore from domestic ticket sales and Rs 90.1 crore from overseas markets.
