August 11, 2026: Farhan Akhtar has once again brought attention to the controversy surrounding Don 3, although he did not mention the film or Ranveer Singh by name.
In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Farhan spoke about an old casting crisis involving Saif Ali Khan during the making of Dil Chahta Hai. While recalling how close the actor came to leaving the film because of a scheduling conflict, Farhan made a passing comment that immediately caught attention.
“It seems to be a pattern nowadays,” he said, after explaining how Saif’s dates for another project had shifted and put his participation in Dil Chahta Hai at risk.

The filmmaker recalled how difficult that moment was for him, particularly because he had already come to see Saif as irreplaceable in the film.
“Everybody tried to convince him,” Farhan Akhtar said, recalling the efforts to keep Saif on board. He added that the prospect of losing the actor was devastating because, in his view, “there was nobody else who could have played that part.”
Farhan’s broader point was about actors potentially stepping away from projects close to production. However, the timing of the remark has led fans and industry watchers to draw a connection with the recent Don 3 dispute.
Ranveer Singh’s exit from Farhan’s Don 3 became a major talking point after the actor reportedly walked away from the project ahead of its planned production schedule. The disagreement subsequently moved beyond the film’s immediate team and reached the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE).
In May, FWICE issued a non-cooperation directive against Singh following the dispute. The organisation later withdrew the directive in June after discussions involving other industry bodies.
The development had added another layer to a film that was already under considerable scrutiny following the change in its lead actor.
Against that backdrop, Farhan’s reference to last-minute exits has inevitably invited interpretation. Still, there is no confirmation that his “pattern nowadays” comment was directed at Singh or Don 3.
For now, the remark remains just that , a remark. But given the history surrounding Don 3, even an indirect reference from its filmmaker is enough to reopen a conversation that the industry had seemingly moved past.
The bigger question is whether Don 3 can finally move ahead after the turbulence surrounding its casting, or whether the project will continue to remain one of Bollywood’s most closely watched unfinished stories.
