As Uunchai hits theaters, the Hum Aapke Hain Koun, maker Sooraj Barjatya, shared few unknown things about his film premiered in 1994 and immediately set all box office records. It was the highest-grossing Indian film ever at the time, a title it kept for 15 years, with 250 crore in worldwide profits.
Meanwhile, Sooraj’s Uunchai On Day 5 story is heartwarming, #Uunchai is still steadfast despite a slight decrease [6.38%] from Day 4… performs better in the evening performances… Eyes 16.75 cr (plus or minus) in Week 1 Weekend 2 is critical… Thurs 1.81, Sat 3.64, Sun 4.71, Mon 1.88, and Tuesday 1.76. 13.80 crores in total.
However, things did not start out too well for the movie Hum Aapke Hain Koun. In fact, during its first weekend, it ran the risk of failing commercially. The director discussed how he observed viewers leaving the movie in an open-ended manner in a recent interview.
Sooraj’s second film under his direction was Hum Aapke Hain Koun. Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Mohnish Behl, Renuka Shahane, Alok Nath, and Reema Lagoo were among the actors who appeared in the movie. Just 6 crore was the film’s modest budget.
However, it had a catastrophic debut weekend in India, taking in only 29 lakh. After day four, word-of-mouth helped Hum Aapke Hain Koun gain popularity. It broke Disco Dancer’s record for highest-earning Indian film ever by grossing over 100 crore in India alone and more than that internationally.
Sooraj Barjatya Uunchai in theaters
This Friday saw the debut of Sooraj’s new movie, Uunchai, which, like Hum Aapke Hain Koun, has been expanding through word of mouth since a mediocre day one.
In a new interview with Indian Express, Sooraj recalled, “Maine Pyaar Kiya was a surprise box office hit while Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! didn’t take off well. We had huge expectations, but the film took off only after four days.”
Sooraj Barjatya says the experience taught him the importance of leaving everything to the audience. He added, “I learnt it very early with Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! because I thought I had made the greatest film, but when we had the premiere people were not liking it! I clearly remember the audience walking out with every song! I thought I had made a good but then I started wondering, ‘Ye kya hogaya’ (what has happened).”
In the end, Hum Aapke Hain Koun picked up after day four via word of mouth. It did a business of over ₹100 crore in India alone and more than that overseas, helping it break Disco Dancer’s record to be the highest-grossing Indian film ever. Sooraj’s new film Uunchai released this Friday and quite like Hum Aapke Hain Koun, has been growing via word of mouth after a moderate day one.
