Ghani Review: Varun Tej’s Ghani would have been a greater success if it had an emotional connect which can make the audience hooked to the story, even after they leave the theater. Then there is too many conflicts the movie is dealing with from beginning to end. For a sport, action thriller, one expects the fights to be gripping, edge-of-the-seat experience. This movie certainly lacks that punch.

Ghani revolves around Ghani (Varun Tej) whose father was also a boxer. The father left the game in disgrace and Ghani is determined to set the record straight. The conflict point is that the mother (Nadhiya) made him promise as a child that he’d never take up boxing

Varun’s Ghani hates his father, Vikramaditya (Upendra), because he believes he doped his way into the sport of boxing. This plot point, which could have been the mainstay of the film, is told so simplistically and predictably that it never registers.

Beginning from Ghani’s approach to boxing to his hatred for his father and how he thrives in the sport, everything feels forced and artificial. The betting angle in Ghani’s story is another missed opportunity.

Ghani Review: Varun Tej Movie Lack The Sporting Action Grip Factor

Ghani feels like a movie from the 80s given its picturization. Actors like Upendra, Suniel Shetty, Jagapathi Babu, and Nadiya are wasted in the film. While Upendra’s Vikramaditya seems to be delivering a lecture at every opportunity he gets, Suniel Shetty seems to be the only one who is in on the joke.

The film wastes a lot of time setting up battles that begin and end with a whimper though the overly loud and almost continuous background score will have you believe that it’s the clash of the Titans. Varun Tej has clearly worked hard to look the part of a boxer but you never really warm up to Ghani at any point.

The effort that Varun Tej has put in the role is visible and if there is one reason to watch this film, it’s him. But to be a mass and action hero, he needs more than just paying Ghani.
