Kamal Haasan, Actor-politician, well known for his body of work and as strong critic, while interacting to the media in Chennai, was once again questioned about his reaction to the celebrations around the Ayodhya Ram Mandir, Ram Lalla event. His answer was simple, and straight forward, he said he stands firm on his opinion he expresed 30 years ago.
Kamal Haasan was citing to his statement made when Babri Masjid was demolished back on December 6, 1991. Kamal was among the select few celebrities who spoke out instantenously after the demolition. He said, “No one had the right to destroy Babri Masjid. It was my building just like Tanjore Temple and Velankanni church are mine.”
India’s Hope for Justice Should Not Go in Vain – Kamal Haasan on Ram Mandir Verdict
Later, in the year 2020, when the verdict of the Supreme Court acquitted all the accused of the Babri Masjid demolition including BJP leader LK Advani, Kamal Haasan shared a cryptic tweet. He tweeted, “Is it irresponsibility of the prosecution for not presenting compelling evidence and strong arguments before justice? Or is it a planned action? Indian’s hope for justice should not go in vain.”
Haasan has been critical, for several years, of right-wing extremism in his films like Hey Ram, which was based on the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. His films have courted controversy for hurting religious sentiments. A song in his film Manmadhan Ambu was censored for its line about Ranganathar (Hindu god Vishnu). The actor has also faced backlash from muslims for the depiction of the community in his film Viswaroopam.
On the new movie project that he is currenly pursuing is the Mani Ratnam’s upcoming film Thug Life and another untitled film with H Vinoth. Kamal will next be seen in Indian 2, directed by Shankar.
Meanwhile, Rajinikanth, soon after returning to Chennai from Ayodhya, briefly met the press and shared his excitement about the new temple. The super star said that he was among the first 150 people who were allowed to see the Ram Lalla idol after the inauguration of the new temple. “It gave me immense happiness,” he added.
