July 11, 2025: A shocking gunfire incident has rocked the newly opened café of Indian comedian Kapil Sharma in Surrey, British Columbia. The incident, which took place late Thursday night, has sparked serious concerns about the growing influence of overseas criminal gangs allegedly linked to Khalistani extremist groups.

Compounding the seriousness of the incident, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, leader of the outlawed Khalistani separatist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), issued a direct threat to Kapil Sharma, accusing him of “promoting Hindutva under the guise of business” in Canada. The message, seen as part of a larger intimidation campaign against pro-India figures abroad, has further escalated tensions.

The café, known as Kap’s Caffe, co-owned by Sharma and his wife Ginni Chatrath, had just celebrated its soft launch with great fanfare. Designed with pastel hues, floral walls, and a curated coffee-and-dessert menu, the café was quickly becoming a local hotspot—until bullets shattered the celebration.

No injuries were reported, but the property suffered visible damage, with shell casings recovered from the scene. Authorities suspect the attack was not random but a targeted assault carried out by the Laddi gang, whose alleged leader Harjit Singh Laddi is believed to have orchestrated the strike. Laddi is a wanted terrorist under Indian law and is linked to the banned group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI).

Following the attack, Kapil Sharma’s security has been significantly tightened both in India and abroad. Though the comedian has not issued a personal statement, Kap’s Caffe released an emotional message on Friday morning:

“To have violence intersect with that dream is heartbreaking… but we are not giving up. Let’s stand firm against violence and ensure Kap’s Caffe remains a place of warmth and community.”

Meanwhile, Harjit Singh Laddi reportedly released a video claiming responsibility for the shooting. In response, India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) has announced a ₹10 lakh reward for any information leading to Laddi’s capture.

Back in India, Sharma is said to be re-evaluating his professional commitments. Sources close to the production of “The Great Indian Kapil Show” on Netflix revealed that the comedian is undecided on resuming the show’s shoot at Mumbai’s Film City studio as security assessments are ongoing.

This incident has once again placed a spotlight on the rising threat posed by international criminal syndicates with ideological ties to banned terrorist groups. Investigations are underway in both India and Canada, with intelligence agencies monitoring cross-border movements and digital communications tied to extremist propaganda.
