September 1, 2024: In a recent Facebook post, legendary actor Mammootty (Mammukka ) called for a thorough and unbiased police investigation into the ongoing allegations of sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry. The 72-year-old actor, known for his significant contributions to Indian cinema, dismissed the notion of a “power center” within the industry and urged authorities to handle the situation with integrity.

Mammukka appeal comes just a day after fellow superstar Mohanlal made a similar statement, asserting his lack of involvement in any power group within Mollywood. Both actors have responded to the swirling controversy surrounding the Justice Hema Committee’s report, which has unveiled serious allegations against several prominent figures in the Malayalam film industry.

In his post, Mammootty emphasized that cinema is a reflection of society, encompassing both its virtues and flaws. He welcomed the recommendations made by the Justice Hema Committee, which was established to propose measures and solutions following the emergence of these troubling allegations. Mammootty expressed confidence that the police investigation, which is currently ongoing, would be conducted with the necessary seriousness and transparency.

“The full version of the Justice Hema Committee report is before the court. Let the police investigate honestly. Let the court decide the punishments. There is no ‘powerhouse’ in cinema,” Mammootty stated. He also highlighted the traditional role of the actors’ organization in addressing such issues, explaining his patience as a result of this norm.

Mollywood Sexual Abuse: Mammootty Denies Power Influence, Demands Transparent Probe

The Malayalam film industry has been rocked by a series of allegations involving sexual assault and harassment. High-profile figures including Jayasurya, Siddique, Mukesh, Maniyanpilla Raju, Idavela Babu, and director Ranjith face serious charges. Notable actors Minu Muneer and Sonia Malhaar have also accused prominent industry personalities of sexual abuse.

The controversy intensified following the public release of the Justice Hema Committee report last week. The 235-page document, which had its contents redacted to protect the identities of witnesses and the accused, suggests that the industry is dominated by a small group of male producers, directors, and actors. The committee, formed by the state government in 2017 and reporting in 2019, faced legal challenges that delayed its publication.

The fallout from these revelations has led to significant upheaval within the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). The executive committee, led by Mohanlal, has resigned in light of the allegations and has been criticized for its role in addressing the scandal.

In response, Mohanlal defended himself and AMMA, stating that the association was not a trade union but a welfare organization for its members. He also expressed frustration at the tendency to blame AMMA for the broader issues facing the industry.

A Special Investigation Team is now scrutinizing the allegations, as the Malayalam film industry faces a critical juncture in its efforts to address and resolve these serious concerns.
