September 30, 2024: Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty has been named the recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award for 2024, the highest honor in Indian cinema. The announcement was made on Monday by Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, via a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Upon hearing the announcement, Mithun Chakraborty reflected on his journey in the film industry, recalling the struggles he faced as a newcomer in Mumbai. “I am short of words. It is an occasion that reminded me of the past. I went to Mumbai from Kolkata. In Mumbai, I did not have food and would sometimes sleep in the garden… After all this, you get this huge honour. I have no words. I can only say I dedicate this award to my family and to fans all over the world,” the actor told reporters in Kolkata.

In his post, Vaishnaw expressed admiration for Mithun’s extensive contribution to Indian cinema. “Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema,” the Union Minister wrote.

A Legendary Career Spanning Over 350 Films

Mithun Chakraborty, a three-time National Award-winning actor, will receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the upcoming National Film Awards ceremony. Known for his versatility across various Indian film industries, including Bollywood and Bengali cinema, Mithun has acted in over 350 films in a career spanning nearly five decades. His acting debut came with the critically acclaimed “Mrigayaa” (1976), directed by Mrinal Sen, for which he won the National Film Award for Best Actor.

Earlier this year, Mithun was also conferred the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, further solidifying his standing as one of the most iconic figures in Indian cinema.

A Journey Marked by Struggles and Triumphs

The 74-year-old actor further reflected on his challenges, stating, “You know my life has never been smooth. I did not get anything on a platter, I had to fight for everything, but when the result comes like this, you forget all the pain. God has been kind.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his thoughts on Actor Mithun Chakraborty winning the Dada Saheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award X and wrote – Delighted that Shri Mithun Chakraborty Ji has been conferred the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, recognizing his unparalleled contributions to Indian cinema. He is a cultural icon, admired across generations for his versatile performances. Congratulations and best wishes to him.

In addition to his reflections on the award, Mithun Chakraborty also expressed his respect for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “I have great respect for PM Modi; he is a fantastic man. I know him, he is a gem of a person,” Mithun added.

Mithun Chakraborty is best remembered for his groundbreaking role in the Bollywood hit “Disco Dancer” (1982), which catapulted him to nationwide fame.
