Lee Sun-kyun, the acclaimed South Korean actor, widely recognized for his memorable role in the Oscar-winning film “Parasite,” following a tragic discovery on Wednesday. Yonhap news agency reported that the actor was found dead in an apparent suicide inside a vehicle at a park in central Seoul.
The news came amidst a backdrop of a police investigation into Lee Sun-Kyun’s alleged involvement with marijuana and other psychoactive drugs. The actor, aged 48, was reportedly facing repercussions in his professional life, with television and commercial projects severing ties following the scandal.
Lee Sun-kyun, a graduate of South Korea’s esteemed Korea National University of Arts, launched his acting career in 2001 with the television sitcom “Lovers.” Over the years, he garnered immense praise for diverse roles, portraying a captivating chef and a devoted architectural engineer confronting marital infidelity.
Internationally acclaimed for his portrayal of the affluent and superficial patriarch in Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite,” Lee’s recent works, including this year’s critically acclaimed horror film “Sleep,” showcased his versatile talent and received accolades at prestigious festivals like Cannes.

In a poignant moment before the tragedy, Lee addressed reporters in October, expressing deep regret for causing disappointment and pain. “I sincerely apologize for causing great disappointment… I feel sorry for my family,” he remarked solemnly.
