Setember 2, 2024: Rhea Chakraborty shared a surprising and heartfelt story about her jail ordeal, and the unexpected support from her friends, extended to her family during her difficult time in Mumbai’s Byculla Jail, in a recent and candid conversation on the Humans of Bombay podcast.

Following the tragic death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, Chakraborty found herself in the eye of a media storm that culminated in her arrest in September 2020 on drug-related charges. Amidst the chaos, her friends provided a unique form of solace to her parents that Chakraborty only discovered after her release.

On the podcast, hosted by Karishma Mehta, Rhea Chakraborty revealed a touching anecdote. She noted that when she was released from jail, she noticed that some of her friends, who had been visiting her parents regularly, had gained significant weight. “One of my friends – a couple of friends – they used to drink with my dad and eat food with him every night while we were inside,” Chakraborty recounted.

Rhea’s initial reaction was one of surprise, as she jested with her friends about their weight gain during her imprisonment. “I was like, ‘Why have you gained so much weight? Kameeno, main waha jail mein thi aur tumlog yaha khana khaa rahe ho, weight put on kar rahe ho (I was in jail and you were eating food and putting on weight).'” Her friends explained that their intentions were purely to comfort her parents and provide a semblance of normalcy during a distressing period.

Rhea Chakraborty’s arrest followed the tragic passing of Sushant Singh Rajput in June 2020. Accused of procuring and supplying drugs to the late actor, she was detained for 28 days before being granted bail. This period marked a turbulent time in her life, with intense media scrutiny and personal trials.

Despite the controversies, Rhea has continued to make strides in her career. Known for her roles in films such as “Tuneega Tuneega,” “Half Girlfriend,” and “Jalebi,” she also participated in popular reality shows like TVS Scooty Teen Diva and Pepsi MTV Wassup. Recently, she has launched her own talk show, Chapter 2, featuring notable guests such as Sushmita Sen and Aamir Khan, signaling a new chapter in her professional journey.
