Chennai, January 27, 2026: The road to the big screen just got even longer for Thalapathy Vijay. In a massive twist this Tuesday, the Madras High Court overturned an earlier ruling that had ordered the Censor Board to give his latest film, Jana Nayagan, a ‘U/A’ certificate.
This means the wait continues for fans who were hoping to see what is widely expected to be the superstar’s final film before he dives full-time into politics with his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
Back to Square One
The drama moved to a higher gear today as Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G. Arul Murugan set aside the January 9 order from a single judge. That previous order had been a huge win for the producers, KVN Productions, as it directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to stop stalling and issue the certificate immediately.
However, the two-judge bench ruled that “natural justice” wasn’t followed. They pointed out that the CBFC wasn’t given a fair chance to file its own defense before the single judge made the call. Now, the whole case is being sent back to the single judge for a fresh hearing.
What’s the Hold-Up for Jana Nayagan?

The CBFC isn’t just being difficult; they claim there are serious concerns. A member of the initial examining committee filed a complaint alleging the Jana Nayagan movie contains:
- Scenes that could hurt religious sentiments.
- An improper portrayal of the Indian Armed Forces.
- Visuals suggesting foreign powers creating unrest in India.
Because of these “serious allegations,” the CBFC Chairperson wanted a Revising Committee to take a second look. The producers argued this was just a delay tactic since they had already made 14 suggested cuts.
Pressure on the System
The High Court didn’t take kindly to the “urgency” created by the filmmakers. The bench previously remarked that producers shouldn’t put undue pressure on the judicial system just to meet a festival release date. Jana Nayagan was originally supposed to be a Pongal treat for fans on January 9, but it has been stuck in legal limbo ever since.
For now, the High Court has told the producers of Jana Nayagan they can amend their petition to specifically challenge the Censor Board’s decision to review the film again.
What’s next? All eyes are back on the single-judge bench. Until a fresh decision is made, Vijay’s “swan song” remains in the cans.
