Danny Movie Review
Danny has a very vanilla script. It presents nothing new. If the late Rama Narayanan turned elephants (and even snakes) into crime-solving detectives, Santhanamoorthy employs a sniffer dog.
Kundhavai (Varalaxmi Sarathkumar) is a police inspector who takes charge of Thanjavur police station after a woman’s body is found burnt to death. The entire world (read as: oor makkal and news media) casts suspicion on the husband, and he is arrested. But Kundhavai believes there is more to the story and follows other leads.
On the parallel, we see Danny nab suspects and has a unique natural gift of getting scent of culprits and crime scenes. So, Danny is brought in to help with the murder investigation. Kundhavai goes off on a tangent chasing the suspects, but tragedy hits home and this sets her on a collision course with the men responsible for the murders.
I always wanted to work with an animal and it was amazing to work with the dog. So, I was really happy.
It loses track due to inclusion of mindless comedy sequences that are unfunny, and only takes away the time that could have instead been used to spin a more gripping narrative. Relatability, too, goes for a toss. It is hard to feel invested with Kundhavai’s cause, to marvel at Danny’s awesomeness or the villainy of its suspects.
Viewers would have anticipated some actions and fight sequences being a cop film, but alas, there is none. Addition of mass action scenes for Varalaxmi — could have added some masala and the audience would have had some thrills to enjoy.
In an interview Varalaxmi had stated OTT was never a part of the thought process. I think OTT has now become a part of the thought process because of the Covid-19 situation. Also, all said and done, you’ll never be able to recreate the experience of watching a film in a theatre. Because, even for us, to see ourselves and see the live reaction of people is what we live for. When people go to theatres, watch the film and say ‘It was good’ or ‘It was , you feel great. We will never get that on an OTT platform. Having said that, you have to be adaptable to change.
The first look of the film, directed by Santhanamoorthi, was released a few months ago by Jayam Ravi. Interestingly, like Danny, two of the recent Tamil films which released on OTT platforms, Ponmagal Vandhal and Penguin, too, were women-centric movies.
It is an okay movie to watch, but dont expect too much from this movie, going by the look or the cop character of the protagonist. Wish the filmmaker gave little bit more twist in the screenplay to make it action binge worthy.
