Uma Maheswara Ugra Roopasya Review: The Telugu movie streaming now on Netflix is a story of a timid photo studio owner, Uma Maheshwara Rao is an absolute joy to watch. It is about a man his 30’s living in a sleepy town Araku, who has modest expectations from life who gets entangled in humiliation scene. What happens next is pure thrill.
Uma Maheswara Ugra Roopasya Review: In short, it’s a pure joy to watch the film, for its freshness and terrific performances
The story is about Uma Maheshwara Rao’s life mission to live with his childhood sweetheart Swathi and his near and dear – his aged father Manohar Rao or the bone-setting centre owner Babji and his assistant Suhas.
Amidst this life dream, there comes a moment when his dream comes crumbling down, and gets crushed quickly as he gets entangled as a peacemaker in a local dispute concerning Babji, and shamed by a squanderer Jognath in public. The public humiliation impacts him hard. For the first time, the timid man turns revengeful. How would he go about retaliating the humiliation?
The story: It is a simple story told in a wholehearted entertaining manner. The movie never lets your attention drift away, as you join the journey of a defeated and humiliated protagonist simpleton photographer who is involved in a fight while trying to defuse a conflict among his fellow villagers, humiliated in public during the showdown, he vows revenge on his attacker.
Satyadev who portrays the role of Uma Maheshwara beautifully widens his skill as a good performer – He combined his skill to excel in a role, trying too hard and still win you over. Maheshwara as a role has several shades, be it his shyness, strong-willed nature and the ability to look at his pages of life with pleasure.
Suhas, gets a sparkling, unusual role, and he excels with a great spontaneity. Be it his unconventional hairdo or his rowdy equation with his boss and the weird friendship he shares with his offspring. He is quite a live-wire in the movie.
Veteran actor Naresh’s as Babji pulls of his role with great honesty with his dialogue delivery which has mockery in every line he shoots from his mouth.
Roopa Koduvayur’s performance is joy to watch. She gels well into the story and displays great character in her effort to support the protagonist in his difficult hour and help him heal through the process. Malayalam actor Raghavan sheer screen presence as the protagonist’s father is overpowering, while Ravindra Vijay masterfully uses his body language to showcase his subtle evil character. Ram Prasad, TNR and Chandana Koppisetti support the movie with their recalling performances.
Uma Maheshwara Ugra Roopasya, is the official remake of the Malayalam film Maheshinte Prathikaram, is completely devoid of being stated as a remake. The director has given it a fresh take. It stands firm on its own novelty when compared to the original.
Direction: The filmmaker Venkatesh Maha has retained the spirit of Maheshinte Prathikaram’s story, with a tinge of his earlier film C/O Kancherapalem, in making the ambience of the movie very vital to his storytelling. His casting is brilliant, and each of them are full of life – they are witty, have a trademark identity and leave a lasting impression when you finish watching the movie.
The film is full of heart, narrated with flair and deals with diversity of human psyche with little finesse. There’s a rustic charm to this sleepy town and you learn more layers of this region as the story advances.
The characterisation is filled with simplicity, a woman who chooses a secure future over a simple living with her childhood love. The turmoil between son, father and his childhood love is so compelling that you get drawn into their life effortlessly.
Then adding spark to the story telling is an adorably entertaining track dedicated to fan wars. The film thrives on the spicy twist to the revenge angle. Maheshwara Rao looks absolutely true to his character. The soul-searching that he does to rediscover his idea of photography (comes from the original) is a refreshing element in the plot.
The supporting characters like Babji, Suhas play a crucial role in the protagonist’s pursuit for vengeance. Uma Maheshwara Roopasya is an enjoyable film which has simplicity, written all over it, and the way the story teller weaves characters in the film with focus.
Great performances by Satyadev, Naresh and Suhas, Excellent dialogues and a honest film.
