December 7, 2025: India world cup winning team batter Smriti Mandhana moved on Saturday to close weeks of speculation around her personal life, formally announcing that her planned wedding to music composer Palash Muchhal has been cancelled. Her decision to address the matter publicly marks a rare step for the usually private cricketer, whose silence had fuelled debates across social platforms after the ceremony was abruptly postponed last month.

In an Instagram statement, Smriti said she felt compelled to speak directly as rumours escalated. “Over the past few weeks there has been plenty of speculation around my life and I feel it is important for me to speak out at this time… I need to clarify that the wedding is called off,” she wrote.

Mandhana Walks Away, Cricket Remains

The couple, together for five years, had been preparing for a November 23, 2025 ceremony that had already drawn significant public attention due to elaborate pre-wedding events shared online. The celebrations came to an unexpected halt when Mandhana’s father, Srinivas Mandhana, suffered a sudden medical emergency. Soon after, reports emerged that Palash Muchhal had been admitted to hospital with stress-related symptoms.

Initially, both families maintained that the wedding was merely delayed. But the situation shifted quickly. Mandhana removed wedding-related posts from her social media accounts and later appeared in public without her engagement ring, changes that intensified questions about the couple’s future. Her confirmation now brings clarity after weeks of contradictory signals.

Mandhana’s statement also firmly repositioned her focus on cricket. The 28-year-old made clear that her international career remains her central priority. “I believe there is a higher purpose driving us all and for me that has always been representing my country at the highest level,” she wrote. “I hope to continue to play and win trophies for India for as long as possible and that is where my focus will forever be.”

Her remarks underscore a broader reality faced by high-profile athletes in India: personal lives often become national conversations, and pauses in communication can quickly turn into speculation cycles. By stepping in directly, Smriti appears intent on ending the narrative before it overshadows upcoming cricket commitments.

A request for space as season commitments loom

She closed her message with a clear appeal: “I request you to please respect the privacy of both families at this time and allow us the space to process and move on at our own pace.”

The timing of the announcement is notable. Smriti is expected to play a central role in India’s international schedule and will lead Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the next Women’s Premier League season. Support from teammates has been visible, Jemimah Rodrigues had withdrawn from the Women’s Big Bash League to stay close to her during the initial fallout—highlighting how the cricketing community has rallied around her.

As Smriti returns to the field, the statement signals an effort to draw a line under the speculation and shift public attention back to her role as one of India’s most important players.
