June 12, 2025: Years after Swades earned critical acclaim and is widely regarded as one of Shah Rukh Khan’s most respected performances, actor Aamir Khan has revealed why he chose not to star in the film when it was first offered to him by director Ashutosh Gowariker.
During a recent interview with Zoom, Aamir shared that while filming Lagaan, Gowariker had narrated a story titled Kaveri Amma—which would eventually become Swades. Despite their successful collaboration on Lagaan, Aamir said he wasn’t convinced by the script and turned down the role.
“Too Boring,” Said Aamir; Swades Took Off Anyway
“I found it very boring,” Aamir admitted, reflecting on the moment. “Ashu narrated the story to me during Lagaan. It was a three-hour-long narration. When he asked how I liked it, I told him honestly—I got bored.”
The actor explained that while he respected the film’s message and themes, he didn’t feel the storytelling was engaging enough at the time. “Your thought is noble, what you want to say is important,” Aamir recalled telling Ashutosh. “But if it’s said in such a boring manner, I won’t enjoy it. Maybe others will, but I didn’t.”
He added that the film might have undergone changes later but confirmed that he has still never watched Swades. “Maine ab tak dekhi nahi hai Swades,” he said.
Released in 2004 with Shah Rukh Khan in the lead, Swades went on to win two National Awards and remains a cult favourite among fans for its grounded storytelling and performance. Many consider it among Shah Rukh’s finest roles.
Aamir’s comments offer a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into how casting decisions are shaped, even for films that eventually become iconic.
On the work front, Aamir Khan will return to the big screen with Sitaare Zameen Par, directed by RS Prasanna. The film is an official remake of the Spanish sports drama Campeones and is slated for theatrical release on June 20.
