The Rings of Power, a brand-new prequel series on Amazon, provides insight into the past of the Harfoots, an early society of Hobbits who, like the Stoors of Smeagol fame, aren’t yet residents of the Shire. The Harfoots reside in Rhovanion, a region east of the Misty Mountains, during the Second Age, when the show is set, whereas the Shire and Eriador are found west of the Misty Mountains.

The Rings of Power. The most expensive show for the streamer yet, The Rings of Power promises to transport viewers back to JRR Tolkien’s fictional world of Middle-Earth. Based around the fabled Second Age of Middle-Earth’s history, when the rings were forged by Sauron, the show is an instant call back to the famed The Lord of The Rings franchise (2001-2003). the first two episodes of The Rings of Power have premiered, with new episodes dropping every Friday. There were huge expectations of the fans from the show and many have been taking to Twitter to share their review and opinion.

The Harfoots that we see in the Rings of Power episode, such the sage old man Sadoc Burrows (Lenny Henry), haven’t yet adapted to the comforts and extravagances that their descendants would eventually take for granted in the Third Age. These Hobbits are more subdued in appearance and reside in modest rather than opulent mansions.

The Harfoots are a little more agile than the sluggish and chubby Hobbits of Bilbo and Frodo’s time, hiding from those who wander their territories. For instance, in the first episode, we see two stupid hunters climbing over a hill, utterly unaware that they are strolling on the edge of the entire Harfoot settlement. And when one of the hunters thinks he hears something rustling in the field below, the other makes fun of him by suggesting that it might be a Harfoot, which he characterises as dangerous magical creatures that are rarely noticed by their victims—until they attack!

We know these fairy-like tiny wanderers couldn’t hurt a fly as the hunters continue on and the adorable little Harfoots emerge from behind bushes, inside trees, and other hiding places. However, The Rings of Power’s worldbuilding is still incredibly fascinating. Because Harfoots interact with the other races of Middle-earth so rarely during the Second Age, a terrifying urban legend has been created about them.

The character Elanor Brandyfoot, played by Markella Kavenagh, in Rings of Power serves as a direct link between the Third Age Hobbits and the Harfoots in The Rings of Power. Naturally, Brandyfoot is quite near “Brandybuck,” one of the Shire’s oldest families, to which Dominic Monaghan’s Meriadoc belongs. The Stoors are the Brandybucks’ closest ancestors according to Middle-earth mythology, but they also share a connection with the Fallohides, the third primary ancestor of the Hobbits. It’s probable that the writers have slightly retconned Brandybuck history for the easter egg because Elanor, who is referred to by her family and friends as “Nori,” is a fresh character developed for the programme.
