Ponniyin Selvan (PS1), Mani Ratnam’s extravagant period movie release day is now less than a week away. The advance ticket sales for the Tamil and Telugu versions of the movie started on Sunday, and within hours, the excitement for the movie was evident. By Sunday afternoon, many shows had almost sold out, and according to sources, the film had already surpassed one crore in advance booking.
The first of a two-part historical epic Ponniyin Selvan, based on Kalki’s book of the same name, is now available. One of the most anticipated movies of the year, the historical fiction has a hefty budget and a star-studded cast. Trade sources claim that by noon on Sunday itself, the gross revenue from advance reservations in both languages exceeded $1 million. That suggests that the movie might have a huge opening weekend, at least for the Tamil version.
By noon, the movie had sold 78,000 seats and made 1.46 crore, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. Out of this, just the Tamil version brought in $1.37 crore, and the Telugu-dubbed version brought in about $9 lakh. The amount will undoubtedly surpass the 10-crore threshold before Friday and, if the buzz persists, may even rise significantly higher.
