Mani Ratnam’s PS1 (Ponniyin Selvan) , is making a historic run in Tamil Nadu after earning Rs. 150 crores there in just 9 days. The historical drama on its 10th day stars Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has surpassed Baahubali 2 and Vikram to become the third movie in Tamil Nadu history to gross over Rs. 150 crore there.
In Tamil Nadu, PS 1 has already eclipsed the lifetime earnings of Baahubali 2 (Rs. 155 crores) on its ninth day, and on Sunday, when it will be in its tenth day, there is a good chance that it will beat Vikram, the current record-holder. Vikram had to wait 5 years to knock Baahubali 2 off the top spot at the Tamil Nadu box office, but PS 1 was able to unseat Vikram in just 3 months.
The way things are going, PS 1 may set a record by grossing at least Rs. 200 crores in Tamil Nadu, which will be a record that PS 2 can break the following year. It’s uncommon for an industry to produce two record-breaking films in the same year, but the Tamil Nadu film industry did so with PS 1 and Vikram over the course of three months.
PS1 steps away to create new box office collections record

With a current TN Gross of Rs. 172 crores, Vikram is currently in first place. It won’t be long until the Kamal Haasan movie drops to second place. The nine-day total for PS 1 in TN is somewhere around Rs. 156 crores.
PS: I is the top opening-week grosser in Tamil cinema history, outperforming Bigil and Vikram, and according to trade analyst Ramesh Bala, is heading towards the Rs 200 crore mark in Tamil Nadu. It is only the fifth Tamil film in history to have made more than Rs 300 crore worldwide, after 2.0, Kabali, Enthiran and Vikram.
Based on a five-part series of novels by Kalki, PS: I was released in theatres on September 30 in five languages — Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. The film stars Karthi, Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, and others. A second installment has already been filmed, and will likely be released next year.
