Pathu Thala – a delightful entertainer. If you’re a fan of gangster films, political dramas, and intense action sequences, then Obeli N Krishna’s Pathu Thala is a must-watch. The film is a Tamil remake of the Kannada blockbuster Mufti, which itself was loosely based on Al Pacino’s Donnie Brasco. Despite the familiarity of the storyline, Pathu Thala manages to stand out from the crowd thanks to its exceptional screenplay and a powerful performance by Silambarasan TR (Simbu).
Simbu, who has delivered two back-to-back successful films in the last couple of years, takes a gutsy move by choosing a project where he isn’t playing the quintessential hero and is mostly absent in the first half of the film. But he leaves maximum impact in the limited screen time he gets, making the most of his role and elevating it just with his presence.
The story revolves around AGR (Silambarasan), the most feared gangster, and Sakthivel (Gautham Karthik), an undercover cop who is tasked with infiltrating AGR’s gang. What sets Pathu Thala apart from any other gangster film is that it’s a political drama at heart. The film explores modern-day politics quite accurately, and AGR isn’t the only one with blood on his hands. The crime angle of the movie largely unfolds in the second half, which keeps the audience engrossed in the story.
Pathu Thala – a great finale
The finale action sequence is one of the major highlights of Pathu Thala shot and presented exceptionally well, leaving the viewer exiting the cinema hall on a high. Gautham Karthik also shines in a role that he hasn’t played before, getting a massy introduction sequence that adds to the film’s appeal. However, the women characters are poorly written, and Priya Bhavani Shankar could have been used more effectively.
AR Rahman’s music and score genuinely help the film work wholesomely. His background score is ultimate, adding goosebumps moments for Simbu fans.
