Oscars 2024: Women Directors Make History with 3 Best Picture Nominations

Oscars 2024 Nominations are out. Oppenheimer topped the nominations for the 96th Academy Awards which were revealed today. The nominations showcased a mix of anticipated favorites and surprising omissions. Two prominent names missing from the list were actress Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig, who failed to secure nods for their contributions to the film “Barbie.”

This year (Oscars 2024) nominations make history by featuring three films nominated for Best Picture, all directed by women—an unprecedented milestone in the realm of the Academy Awards.

Meanwhile, Leonardo DiCaprio’s absence from the Best Actor category for “Killers Of The Flower Moon” added to the list of unexpected exclusions.

However, Oppenheimer emerged as a frontrunner with an impressive 13 nominations, tying with “Poor Things” and “Killers Of The Flower Moon” (minus its male lead), which received 11 and 10 nods, respectively. Lily Gladstone, DiCaprio’s co-star and the first indigenous actress to win a Golden Globe this year, secured an Oscar nomination.

In the realm of “Barbie,” disappointment loomed for Robbie and Gerwig, yet America Ferrera found recognition in the Best Supporting Actress category. Ryan Gosling not only received a Best Supporting Actor nomination but also saw his song “I’m Just Ken,” from the film, nominated for Best Original Song.

The Best Director category raised eyebrows as Greta Gerwig was notably absent. However, Justine Triet’s nomination for “Anatomy of a Fall” ensured a gender-inclusive lineup, making Gerwig the first woman to direct three Best Picture-nominated films. This year also marked a historic moment with three films directed by women nominated for Best Picture.

As for Oppenheimer’s acting nods, Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr, and Emily Blunt secured nominations for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress, respectively. Golden Globe winners, including Emma Stone and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, also made appearances in the nominee list.

Major changes were introduced this year, with the Oscars 2024 applying a diversity rule to Best Picture nominees. Films competing in this category must meet at least two of four “representation and inclusion standards,” aiming to enhance the portrayal and employment of underrepresented communities.

Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid announced the Oscar nominations, setting the stage for the upcoming awards ceremony scheduled for March 10 in Los Angeles (early morning of March 11 in India). Jimmy Kimmel is set to return as the host.
