As Vinod Chopra reminisced about the past, he revealed a pivotal moment involving Shah Rukh Khan. Back when he was crafting the romantic masterpiece ‘1942: A Love Story’, Vinod had his eyes on the rising star. “Shah Rukh had a history with me,” he shared.
“I had seen his work. Renu (Saluja, my then-wife) had edited a film called Maya Memsaab, where Shah Rukh had a small role. So, I offered him a part in ‘1942’. I was the first person to extend such an offer to him. But he wasn’t a star then.”
Despite Vinod’s early recognition, Shah Rukh Khan’s trajectory took a different turn. The actor soared to fame with iconic hits like ‘Darr’ and ‘Baazigar’, leaving behind the role that could have been.
In the end, it was Anil Kapoor who graced the screen as the lead in ‘1942: A Love Story’. The film, set against the backdrop of India’s struggle for independence, featured the talented Manisha Koirala alongside Kapoor. Interestingly, the role initially intended for Manisha was meant for the legendary Madhuri Dixit. The ensemble cast also included the charismatic Jackie Shroff.

Fast-forward to 2003, and Vidhu Vinod Chopra once again reached out to Shah Rukh. This time, it was for the titular role in Rajkumar Hirani’s heartwarming comedy-drama ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’. However, fate intervened once more. Shah Rukh faced medical concerns that forced him to step away from the project. Vinod, ever supportive, assured him, “Take your time, recover fully, and when you return, my film will be your first.” Unfortunately, unforeseen complications persisted, leading to Sanjay Dutt donning the iconic character.
While Shah Rukh Khan missed out on ‘1942’, his star continued to ascend. After his Bollywood debut in Raj Kanwar’s romantic drama ‘Deewana’, he graced the silver screen in a string of memorable films.
