August 19, 2024: “Stree 2,” the sequel to the 2018 horror-comedy hit “Stree,” has made a successful entry at the global box office, raking in a remarkable Rs 283 crore in its opening weekend. The film, starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, has managed to bring audiences to theatres both in India and internationally, drawing positive business for the genre.

According to Maddock Films, the production house behind the film, the sequel amassed an impressive Rs 240 crore (gross) in India alone, with an additional Rs 43 crore (gross) pouring in from international markets. The film’s net box office collection in India stood at a substantial Rs 204 crore, as confirmed by the official X page of the banner.

The makers expressed their gratitude to the audience with an exuberant post, stating, “The Box Office Juggernaut that’s BREAKING and SHATTERING records! Thank you, audience, for making it happen.”

Directed by Amar Kaushik, “Stree 2” hit theatres on August 15, coinciding with India’s Independence Day. The film continues the thrilling saga of Vicky, played by Rao, and his friends as they confront a new, terrifying entity—Sarkata, a ghost with only a head—alongside the enigmatic woman portrayed by Kapoor. The cast also features strong performances by Abhishek Banerjee, Pankaj Tripathi, and Aparshakti Khurana.

The sequel is a key installment in producer Dinesh Vijan’s ambitious horror-comedy universe, which also includes popular titles like “Bhediya” and “Munjya.” With its record-breaking opening, “Stree 2” not only solidifies the franchise’s appeal but also paves the way for future expansions within this uniquely entertaining cinematic universe.
