The first movie that comes to mind and hugely popular is Akshay Kumar’s Toilet Ek Prem Katha.

Toilet – Ek Prem Katha traces the love story between a simple man Keshav (Akshay Kumar) and progressive Jaya (Bhumi Pednekar), set in two villages near Mathura. Toilet – Ek Prem Katha is a satirical take on a battle against the age old tradition of open defecation in the country. From the panchayat to the sanitation department, from the role of the government to the superstitions of the villagers, from scams to the ethos, from first love to a matured romance.

The next is also another Akshay Kumar movie Padman.

The movie revolves around Lakshmikant Chauhan ( Akshay Kumar) and about his wife Gayatri’s (Radhika Apte) menstrual hygiene. In the story he urges her to desist using the cloth as a pad and opt for sanitary napkins.

Being a humble rural woman, Gayatri is reluctant to go for disposable pads as she believes they are costly and affects family expenses outflow.

However, her husband Lakshmi obsessed and very concerned over a ‘ladies problem’  insists on bringing upon a change by addressing the taboo topic. The beauty of the story lie in challenging the traditions, and hostility that comes with it, also beating the religious and age-old beliefs of people around. The outcome is brilliant and what engages you in the movie is – can the man brave the resistance and get his point across?
