Netflix has cancelled future seasons of the acclaimed series 1899, which premiered its first season on November 17. This was reavealed by 1899 co-showrunners Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar.

1899 on Netflix has been cancelled after only one season. The mystery thriller series, which starred Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, and Miguel Bernardeau, debuted on the streaming service last November.

The series is about mysterious events change the course of an immigrant ship headed for New York in 1899, a mind-bending riddle unfolds for its bewildered passengers.

Co-showrunners Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar confirmed the news on Baran’s Instagram, saying that the show would not be renewed for another season “We must break the news to you with heavy hearts that 1899 will not be renewed. We wished we could have wrapped up this amazing trip with a second and third season, much like we did with Dark. However, there are situations when your plans don’t work out. This is life. We are aware that this will displease a lot of fans. But we nevertheless want to express our sincere gratitude for being a part of this fantastic trip. We cherish you. Do not forget.”

Netflix 1899 will not be renewed

The German-language, multilingual drama 1899, which debuted on Netflix on November 17 with all the episodes broadcast at once, was directed by the team behind the sci-fi thriller Dark. It earned a lot of positive reviews and even made the coveted Top 10 ranking. The eight-episode serial, which took place on the migrant steamship Kerberos as it sailed from London to New York 13 years before the Titanic’s tragic voyage, introduced a cast of eccentric individuals. The first season came to an abrupt end. Seasons two and three have already been discussed publicly by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar.

According to a review, “People have been wondering whether any projects will even come close to how the Lost series had revolutionised the genre on the smaller screen for years, ever since that sad Lost finale over ten years ago.

Both Westworld and Dark, in their own ways, came dangerously near. It appears that Netflix’s multi-hyphenate, multi-genre series 1899 is the new successor to the throne. The mystery-horror genre of the time is in the appropriate amounts mind-bending, captivating, compelling, and shocking. Even though it lacks the freshness of Lost and Inception, this powerful creature manages to keep you on the edge of your seat for the entire eight episodes.”

In a lengthy Twitter thread accusing the Netflix series of piracy, Brazilian comic book creator Mary Cagnin recently noted significant parallels between the show and her 2016 comic Black Silence. The eventual deaths of several of the characters were among the parallels she drew between the character arcs in her comic and the show.
