December 3, 2025: Bollywood star Ranveer Singh has landed in controversy after a Bengaluru-based advocate filed a complaint against him for allegedly hurting religious sentiments during his performance at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.
The actor, while praising Rishab Shetty’s Kantara Chapter 1, recreated the Ullalthi Daiva ritual scene on stage. The complainant claims Singh’s remarks, reportedly describing the Daiva as a “demon” and “female ghost” , were derogatory to the Tulu-speaking community’s traditions.
The case has been registered under sections of the Bharat Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, citing that Singh’s act was “illegal and offensive” to millions of Hindus.
Apology Issued, But Case Against Ranveer Singh Stands
A Bengaluru-based lawyer, Prashanth Metal, has filed a complaint against actor Ranveer Singh for imitating Rishab Shetty’s Ullalthi Daiva sequence during his speech at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 28. According to the complaint, while commending Kantara Chapter 1 and its creator Rishab Shetty, Singh allegedly referred to the Daiva as a “demon” and a “female ghost.” The petitioner argues that these remarks were disrespectful and offensive to religious sentiments.
Following backlash and viral circulation of the video online, Ranveer Singh issued a public apology on Instagram, clarifying that his intention was only to highlight Shetty’s powerful performance. He emphasized his respect for India’s diverse cultures and traditions, stating: “If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”
The incident has sparked intense debate on social media, with some demanding accountability while others believe the apology should settle the matter.
