Kalamkaval Review: Must Watch Mammootty, Vinayakan Dark Thriller

December 8, 2025: Kalamkaval draws you with a deceptively tender romance in the beginning before plunging the audience into the chilling world of a serial killer. From the start, the film lays all its cards on the table: viewers know the identity of the murderer, rumored to be inspired by real-life criminal Cyanide Mohan, leaving the suspense focused entirely on the investigators’ pursuit.

Debutant director Jithin K Jose co-wrote a script that explores the psychological cat-and-mouse game between the cold-blooded killer and the determined police officer chasing him. While this early revelation risks dulling traditional suspense, the film offers a significant mid-story twist that shifts the narrative in an unexpected direction, expanding its thematic scope beyond mere crime procedural.

The story follows Inspector Jayakrishnan (Vinayakan), investigating a missing woman case initially framed as communal tension in Kerala. The investigation gradually unravels a pattern of targeted murders across Kerala and Tamil Nadu, revealing a killer who preys on isolated and vulnerable women. Mammootty, playing the antagonist, dominates the screen with a chilling, understated menace. His portrayal avoids glorifying the killer, presenting a methodical psychopath whose enjoyment of vintage Tamil songs and cigarette rituals adds character detail without sensationalism.

Vinayakan matches Mammootty step for step, portraying Jayakrishnan with quiet intensity and sharp intelligence. The supporting cast, including Rajisha Vijayan and Shruti Ramachandran, make strong impressions despite limited screen time. Unlike many recent Malayalam thrillers, Kalamkaval handles sexual violence and gore with restraint, emphasizing psychological horror over graphic spectacle.

Cinematographer Faisal Ali transforms mundane settings, lodges, public space, into claustrophobic traps, while Mujeeb Majeed’s music amplifies the tension and dread. Yet, the narrative of Kalamkaval struggles to maintain consistent momentum. Beyond the captivating performances, the thriller sometimes feels uneven, and the climactic confrontation, though powerful in parts, falls short of the narrative’s early promise.

While comparisons with the Hindi web series Dahaad are inevitable, Kalamkaval chooses a different path, focusing less on social critique and more on the dynamics of its lead characters. The film’s strength lies in its performances, particularly Mammootty’s commanding presence, which carries the story even when the screenplay falters.

At 139 minutes, Kalamkaval is a stylish, intense police procedural that thrives on its leads’ charisma. Though it does not fully explore the social implications of its subject matter, it remains compelling for its taut performances, psychological depth, and the quiet menace that Mammootty brings to the screen.

Rating: 4/5 : A gripping performance-driven thriller that excels in character work, even if the plot occasionally skims the edges of suspense.
